The objective of coating is to deliver the seed in a form that is larger, rounder, smoother, and more uniform than the original seed. Seed coating aims to influence the external physical properties of the seed, affecting the sowing characteristics only. In this study we try to report the chain copolymerization of crotonic acid as a main monomer and styrene, alpha-methylstyrene or methylmethacrylate as co-monomer in the present of potassium persulfate, AIBN or fenton reagent as radical initators. Also the effect of polymerization time and temperature was investigated. After that the application of polymers studied as seed coating. The results indicated that copolymerization of alpha- methylstyrene and crotonic acid in the presence of oxalic acid and K2S2O8, at 80¨¬C and 1hr was the best procedure to produce sugar beet seed coating. The DSC of sample shows two points on 95.68 and 116.18¢ªC that would be related to transition glass of crotonic acid and alpha- methyl styrene moieties. The polymer was evaluated by using for sugar beet seed coating. It is recommended to use synthesized polymers at the rate of 1.0-1.5 g/100 g seeds in sugar beet seed processing owing to their significant, favorable effect on seed vigor.
